Racist Picture

Racist Picture

You are viewing a racist picture of a Negro playing the trombone. The lithograph was created by the U.S. Printing Company in 1899, and reveals many of the racist attitudes of the day.  The illustration portrays the black man with stereotypical facial features, and he is portrayed somewhat as a buffoon.  He is shown to be careless, as he stomps on a valuable violin. Images such as this were common at the turn of the century.  At this time, Blacks were often the object of ridicule.

Archival grade prints of this image in 8X10 or 13X19 are available for a contribution to this site of $75. Your contribution allows us to continue to expand the free educational resources on this site.
