Smiling Black Man

Smiling Black Man Caricature

You are viewing a picture of a Smiling Black Man. This is a lithograph advertising the Richards & Pringle's Famous Minstrel Show. The Lithograph was created in 1907, by the US Lithograph Company. This broadside features the image of a Black Man, Billy King, with a very wide smile. The Minstrel show provided entertainment at the expense of African Americans. Minstrel posters such as this one clearly demonstrate the racist attitudes that existed in the early 1900's.

Archival grade prints of this image in 8X10 or 13X19 are available for a contribution to this site of $75. Your contribution allows us to continue to expand the free educational resources on this site.
