Sumner, INCREASE, jurist; born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, November 27, 1746; admitted to the bar in 1770, and began practice in his native town; was a representative in the State legislature in 177680, and in the State Senate in 178097; associate judge of the Supreme Court in 178297; governor of Massachusetts in 179799 ; and a member of the convention that adopted the national Constitution in 1789. He died in Roxbury, Mass., June 7, 1799.
