Eaton, THEOPHILUS, colonial governor; born in Stony Stratford, England, in 1591; was bred a merchant,, and was for some years the English representative at the Court of Denmark. Afterwards he was a distinguished London merchant, and accompanied Mr. Davenport to New England in 1637. With him he assisted in founding the New Haven colony, and was chosen its first chief magistrate. Mr. Eaton filled the chair of that office continuously until his death, January 7, 1658.
