Uncle Sam and Columbia

[Back to Uncle Sam Cartoons]

This is a cartoon featuring Uncle Sam and Columbia. It is from the August 23, 1862 edition of Harper's Weekly. The image has the caption:

UNCLE Sam. "Go ahead, Boys: I'll take care of the Wives and Babies. GOD bless you!

This is a patriotic image showing soldiers marching off to serve in the Civil War.   The image shows Uncle Sam standing next to Columbia.  Women and children, supposedly the families of the soldiers, are shown behind the two symbols of the country.  Also pictured are large bags of gold, indicating that Uncle Sam intended to keep his word to provide for the families of the soldiers.
