Just as the United States has Uncle Sam as its National Symbol, Great Britain enjoys the National Symbol of John Bull.  John Bull is typically a portly fellow sporting a top hat and wearing the Union Jack flag as a shirt. He often has a cane and overcoat.

John Bull can first be found around 1712, a creation of John Arbuthnot. He was popularized through political cartoons, many of which appeared on the pages of Harper's Weekly.  Harper's Weekly was important in popularizing the image of John Bull because of both its wide circulation, and its prolific use of wood cut illustrations. John Bull is sometimes pictured as a lion, or with a lion, analogous to the American Eagle sometime shown with Uncle Sam. In addition, he was sometimes pictured as a bull, as can be seen in some of the cartoons below.
