Uncle Sam and John BullThis is a very early cartoon featuring Uncle Sam and John Bull. The cartoon has the caption:
Uncle Sam can be seen forging a ring entitled
"Union". He is pictured as a strong and steady blacksmith.
The cartoon is from the November 8, 1862 edition of Harper's Weekly.
It is meant to depict the tension between the US (Uncle Sam) and
Great Britain (John Bull). While Great Britain never
officially recognized the confederacy, they certainly strongly
sympathized and helped them. This was a constant source of
frustration for US president
Abraham Lincoln. |
