Uncle Sam and John Bull

[Back to Uncle Sam Cartoons]

This is a very early cartoon featuring Uncle Sam and John Bull.  The cartoon has the caption:

EXASPERATION OF JOHN BULL AT THE NEWS FROM THE U. S.

JOHN ( frothing at the Mouth), "He won't go to smash—he won't die—he won't give up restoring the Union, though I've told him, over and over, that it is no use. What Beasts those Yankees are! Ugh!"

Uncle Sam can be seen forging a ring entitled "Union".  He is pictured as a strong and steady blacksmith.  The cartoon is from the November 8, 1862 edition of Harper's Weekly. It is meant to depict the tension between the US (Uncle Sam) and Great Britain (John Bull).  While Great Britain never officially recognized the confederacy, they certainly strongly sympathized and helped them.  This was a constant source of frustration for US president Abraham Lincoln.
