Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner

Thomas Nast's "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner" Illustration

Thomas Nast is generally attributed with creating the popular image of Uncle Sam.  The image above, titled "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner" represents Thomas Nast's first Uncle Sam illustration. Uncle Sam is pictured standing and carving a turkey. The illustration contains the caption, "Come One, Come All, Free and Equal". Men and Women of all races and backgrounds are shown sitting as equals at Uncle Sam's Table.  Shown on the wall are portraits of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Ulysses S. Grant.

This famous image helped create one of the ideals of the United States . . . that all are equal and all are welcome.
