Thomas Nast's Original "Central Park Summer" Print

This is another historical illustration of New York's Central Park.  It is an intriguing 1864 Thomas Nast illustration entitled "Central Park in Summer".  The illustration would have been a refreshing break from the carnage of the Civil War, which had been the mainstay of Harper's Weekly Illustrations for the previous three years. The leaf is from an 1864 Harper's Weekly, and is over 140 years old.

Central Park Summer

Thomas Nast "Central Park Summer"  (Click on Image for Enlarged View)

The image shows a number of interesting scenes of New York City's Central Park in the summer of 1864.  The central image shows a wonderful scene of the the people of New York enjoying a day of fun in the sun at Central Park.  The image shows the interesting dress and customs of the people of the day.  Small children can be seen frolicking in the grass.

The image to the left shows beautiful peacocks in the park, and the image to the right show white tail deer in the park.  The upper left inset shows pedestrians in Central Park, and the upper right image shows people enjoying a horse back ride in Central Park.

The lower images show scenes around the lake.  The left shows swans in the lake, and the lower center image shows boats on the lake at night near the Bow Bridge.  The lower right image shows the Terrace in Central Park.

This is a fascinating Thomas Nast image of Central Park.  You can spend hours studying all the interesting historical content.
