Thomas Nast's Original "The
Capture of Lookout Mountain - General Hooker Fighting Among the Clouds"
Print
You are viewing an
incredible Civil War illustration by Thomas Nast. It is entitled "The
Capture of Lookout Mountain - General Hooker Fighting Among the Clouds."
This is an absolutely
fabulous Nast drawing showing the Battle for Lookout Mountain. The
leaf is over 140 years old, and shows an incredible view of the battle.
There were low hanging clouds on the day of battle, so the top of the
mountain was actually protruding through the low hanging clouds. This
creates an image of the soldiers actually standing on clouds as they fight
each other.

The illustration shows an
intense battle for Lookout Mountain on a cloudy December morning. Injured
and dieing soldiers are seen on the ground. A soldier is shown charging up
the mountain on horseback, led by a brave color bearer carrying a tattered
flag. In the background more soldiers are seen, and far in the distance the
enemy is bravely defending the mountaintop.
Thomas Nast's distinctive
signature can be seen in the lower right of the illustration.
