Thomas Nast's Original "Civil War POW's" Print

This, is an original 1863 Thomas Nast Civil War illustration. The leaf is from an 1863 Harper's Weekly newspaper. The leaf is captioned, "The Prisons at Richmond- Union Prisoners at Belle Isle." The print shows starving Union prisoners in the prison at Richmond.  The men are emaciated, and obviously starved to the point of death.

The illustration shows well-fed confederate troops guarding the prisoners.  In the background, several prisoners appear to be being beaten by Rebel guards.

This 1863 illustration was no doubt intended to inflame the north by presenting this image of Union soldiers being mistreated.
