General Ulysses S. Grant
By 1864, the Civil War was
finally beginning to turn in favor of the union, after several years of
Confederate military superiority. This February 1864 Harper's Weekly
attributes this change in fortune to General Ulysses S. Grant. The
image on the front cover is by Thomas Nast, showing Lady Liberty (known as
Columbia at the time) pinning a medal on General Grant. This patriotic
image features Union flags, and a wreath with the name "Grant" inscribed
inside. The caption of the picture says simply, "Thanks to Grant".
Clearly, the image reflected a grateful nation, and an appreciation to the
willingness of Ulysses S. Grant to fully engage the south, and to bring the
North's superior supplies and resources fully to bear in the war. |
