Thomas Nast's Original "The
Sanitary Commission" Print
This is an interesting 1864 Thomas Nast
picture showing the contributions of Civil War Women. The central
image is labeled with a large banner, "Our Heroines", and shows a woman
caring for an injured Civil War soldier. The soldier is in bed with a
bandage on his head, obviously badly wounded. The kind woman is shown
reading scriptures to him from the Bible. |

In the upper left inset image, a woman is shown giving
comfort to a soldier in a tent on the battlefield. In the upper right,
another Civil War woman is shown caring for a wounded soldier in a hospital.
The lower left shows a woman sewing garments, and then in the lower right
image, the same Civil War woman is shown selling those garments at the fair
to raise money for helping to care for the soldiers. This is an image
in which Nast sought to capture, and pay tribute to the contributions of
Women in the Civil War.We hope you enjoy this complete Gallery of
